One Digital – Providing Basic Digital Skills to Thousands of People

Head of operations, Theresa Pruvost, was delighted to attend a One Digital event held at the beautiful Southwark Cathedral in London on Wednesday, 25 May.

The event showcased the pioneering digital skills collaboration – One Digital – funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

One Digital is a collaboration of 6 diverse organisations including AbilityNet, Age UK, the Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations, Citizens Online, Digital Unite and Affinity Sutton, whose purpose is to recruit, train and support hundreds of Digital Champions nationwide, to help thousands of people develop basic digital skills across a wide cross sector of society.

Theresa said, “I was really interested to hear from the Big Lottery Fund’s keynote speaker, Dawn Austwick, that in the UK 11,000,000 people have never used the Internet.”

Theresa continues, “Often these people are already disadvantaged by social background or disability so digital inclusion has a vital role to play helping these people feel included in society. I was interested to hear from Dawn Austwick how WhatsApp is used by one billion people worldwide with 70% using it daily and how 81% of over 55’s in the UK say that being online makes them feel part of society and less lonely.”
